Day 4: Wee bit o' soreness appears

Workout

The jumprope portion of the workout went faster today than any of the prior three days. I'm getting the hang of it.

I finally had some muscle soreness--I expected it to come on immediately, so the fact that it didn't come on until Day 4 was kind of a pleasant surprise. My inner thighs were sore (which made me wonder where the heck that came from... why just the inner thigh? I must have weak inner thighs). My calves were just a little tender, but nothing that didn't go away once I started warming up. The one pang that concerned me is on the inner side of my right calf/shin (it's on the side, not on the front or back of the leg). I'm prone to shin-splints, so I've been trying to make sure I stretch the calf and shin sufficiently to avoid those... this isn't really in the shin, so I don't know if it's other muscle soreness or the start of the shin splints. I'm hoping the former--shin splints are such a bitch. I really don't want to wind up dealing with those!

My leg-ups seemed far less painful than the ones from Day 2, which I felt very noticeably in my hip flexors. I felt today's much more distinctly in my lower abs.

Food

So far, so good. Nothing new to report here. Not feeling particularly deprived or crave-y or anything.

Emotions

Woke up feeling considerably better than the "meh" I felt yesterday. Felt motivated and rested. The only craving I've noticed is comfort... I want to curl up on a comfy sofa (which I don't own) and nestle into a big fluffy sweatshirt. I'm sure it has to do with me pushing the bounds of my own comfort zone (for this project and in other areas of life, including business). So I'm just noticing that this is coming up--an urge to nestle and retreat.

Celebrations

I'm proud of my improving jumprope ability. I'm proud that I've shown up for myself 4 days in a row, as that hasn't happened in quite a while. I'm excited and and feeling supported by the comments I'm getting on this blog.

  1. Great stuff Marissa. It's a good feeling to keep going, even when it might be easier to sit back and do nothing. Keep it up. If you do, I promise I will too.

By the way, have you noticed that Patrick has co-ordinated the colour of the foods in the diet picture with our clothing in the exercise pictures? Now that's personal service.

  2. I'm proud, too, that you've shown up for yourself. If there is any single thing that I desire for our generation in our family (you, me, Chaz, Sam, etc.), it's that we begin to eradicate the sedentary, overindulgent and generally unhealthy lifestyle that our family has been accustomed to for decades.

I hope that a lifestyle of activity and healthy eating is simply automatic for our children...not one that they have to fight with themselves tooth and nail to attain and maintain (at least, that's the struggle I find within myself).

  3. "Showing up" is exactly the right term. It's not about having great workout or a crappy workout, or feeling sore or feeling strong. It's about showing up, day after day. 86 more to go!

  4. @Nickety: No, I hadn't noticed the food-clothes color coordination. But I dig it now that you've pointed it out. Indeed, that is personal service!

@Alex: Thanks for the Showing Up support. :)

@Patrick: Here's to showing up... 86 more times!
